As temperatures soar during the summer months in Western Australia, you might start thinking of ways to stay cool, while still enjoying all the west coast has to offer. If you’re visiting Perth on a working holiday then you need to get some travelling done. So why not have a couple of days away from your Perth hostel or even a day trip and head out to some of these great locations just outside of Perth.
This might be ultimate summer escape from Perth during the hot summer months. Easily accessible from Fremantle Port, it is a half an hour ferry ride from Perth, yet feels like another world. With no cars on the island and many of pristine beaches, Rottnest Island is the perfect place to bike, surf, swim, snorkel, and scuba dive in clear waters.
This calm cove in Geographe Bay is approximately 2 ½ hours from Perth and contains the longest timber jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. In Bussleton, you can take the 1.8km walk along the jetty or ride the train over the waves, to view Australia’s best artificial reef. It’s also possible to view the reef from the Underwater Observatory, or better yet, suit up for a scuba dive to have a closer look!
A little over 3 hours from Perth, you can arrive at the famous wine region of Margaret River. This is the ideal spot to indulge, not only in world-class wineries and restaurants, but also in stunning beaches with exceptional surfing. This area is blessed with mild weather compared to the rest of the coast, so you’ll find refuge among the spectacular scenery.
Just 50 minutes south of Perth, Mandurah is a great place to go if you want to be in or near the water during the hot summer months. You can hire a boat, houseboat, kayak, canoe, or jet-ski and explore the 130km of waterways. Off the water, it’s possible to join a 4-wheel-drive expedition.
If standing in knee-deep water with bottlenose dolphins sounds like a great activity on a warm day, head to Bunbury’s Dolphin Discovery Centre in Koombana Bay. This is about 2 hours from Perth, or a short flight will get you there in a flash. Bunbury is a cosmopolitan city on the edge of pristine forest and beaches, so there is a lot to do!
